A 3-year-old shot himself Monday after finding a gun in a car, according to a news release from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

At 6:30 p.m., deputies responded to the Greenville Hospital System campus in Greer, where they discovered “a 3 year-old gunshot victim,” the news release said.

The little boy is listed in critical condition after being rushed to the hospital, per the news release.

The shooting occurred after he found the weapon inside a vehicle and “accidentally discharg(ed) the firearm,” the sheriff’s office said in the news release.

The shooting is currently being ruled “accidental,” according to the news release, but it remains under investigation.

There is no word if there will be any criminal charges, or where the gun was located in the vehicle.
