Police chase ends when car crashes into Cayce Waffle House — and it stayed open
One person was arrested after leading troopers on a chase on Interstate 26 that ended when the suspect’s car crashed into a Waffle House, according to police.
It started just after 2 a.m. Thursday, when a vehicle passed troopers at a high rate of speed on Interstate 26, according to Lance Cpl. David Jones of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Troopers went after the vehicle but weren’t able to catch up, Jones said. The suspect got off I-26 at Exit 113 and tried to pull into the Waffle House parking lot when he hit the building instead.
Gregory Alexander Maxwell was identified as the driver, Jones said. Maxwell, 27, is charged with DUI and failure to stop for blue lights, according to Lexington County jail records.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash since it involved a Highway Patrol chase, Jones said.
No injuries were reported from the car crashing into the Waffle House, according to the Cayce Department of Public Safety.. An employee who answered the phone at the Waffle House said the restaurant is still open.
Pictures posted to Facebook by another employee show damage to a corner of the building and debris scattered across the inside of the dining area.
