Inmate found dead at Midlands jail, sheriff’s department says

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating after an inmate was found dead at the Aiken County Detention Center, according to a statement from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies called SLED to help investigate the death Friday, SLED spokesman Thom Berry said.

Crime scene agents began looking into the scene Friday morning, but it appeared that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death, according to the sheriff’s department statement.

“Our work is underway and continuing,” Berry said.
