Columbia man charged with animal neglect after starving, sick dog found by neighbors

A Columbia man was arrested after police said he neglected to feed or give water to his dog, according to a statement from the Columbia Police Department.

James Bennett, 41, was charged with ill treatment of animals after his dog, Sadie, escaped from home and was found by the neighbors, according to the statement.

Earlier this month, Sadie escaped from a fenced in area at the home on South Holly Street, according to the statement. The neighbor took her to the vet for medical treatment.

The vet found that Sadie had been neglected, starved and was suffering from diseases that could have been prevented, according to the statement. Columbia police seized the dog and took her to the City of Columbia Animal Shelter for proper care.

Bennett was arrested.
