A Blythewood man was arrested Thursday after state agents said he slammed a vulnerable adult in his care on the floor, according to a statement from the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

James Gray, 46, was working as a human services assistant at The Midlands Regional Center when he allegedly attacked the man and left him with life threatening injuries, according to his arrest warrant.

The Midlands Regional Center is a 24-hour residential care center for adults with severe disabilities, according to S.C. Access. The center is run by the S.C. Department of Disabilities and Special Needs.

Gray is accused of picking up the resident around his waist and slamming him onto the floor on Jan. 6, according to the arrest warrant. Witnesses reported the attack to SLED officials.

Gray was later arrested and charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult, according to the statement. He was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

A similar incident happened at the facility in July 2018. Charles Edward Alston, 56, was charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult after hitting a resident in the head with a wooden brush.
