Police investigating murder after man was shot, ejected during crash, officers say

After finding out that a man involved in an accident in Columbia was shot, police are now investigating his case as a murder, according to a statement from the Columbia Police Department.

Shamar M. Johnson, 22, died as a result of a gunshot wound to his upper body and trauma sustained in an insuing crash Feb. 9, according to the statement.

Johnson was taken to the hospital at about 3 a.m. after Columbia officers found that he was ejected from his car ater a single-car crash on Shop Road near Interstate 77, according to the statement. Johnson had lost control of his car and collided with a median.

After Johnson arrived at the hospital, authorities found multiple gunshot wounds.

When police first reported the crash Tuesday, Johnson was still alive and receiving medical care.
