A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy crashed a patrol car while pursuing another driver, but it was the actions of that driver after the crash that surprised the sheriff.

The collision happened Monday afternoon on U.S. 1 in Lugoff, the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. A deputy was trying to turn around and pursue a car that was driving over the center line when the wreck happened.

Additional details about the collision, including what caused it, were not immediately available, but the S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.

No injuries were reported in the collision, the sheriff’s office said. But deputies say the driver of the vehicle that the deputy was about to pursue returned to the scene to make sure the officer was OK, and to provide his information to state troopers.

“The young man went home and told his mother, who called Sheriff (Lee) Boan to offer any assistance,” the sheriff’s office said. “We would like to thank this young man for doing the right thing. It’s apparent he was raised well.”
