Man thrown over barrier of on-ramp to Charleston bridge in deadly crash, police say

A man died after being thrown over the barrier of an on-ramp to a Charleston bridge when his disabled car was hit by another vehicle, according to police.

The deadly crash happened around 8 p.m. Wednesday on the on-ramp from Interstate 26 East to the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, according to a release from the Charleston Police Department. A Suzuki SUV was traveling on the on-ramp between I-26 and the bridge when it hit a Ford sedan that was disabled on the right shoulder of the on-ramp.

The force of the crash pushed the Ford forward, hitting the vehicle’s owner, who had exited the disabled vehicle, police said. The owner was thrown over the Jersey barrier and fell from the elevated roadway to the ground below.

The victim was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was pronounced dead several hours later, police said. A passenger in the Ford who also had exited the car, and the driver of the Suzuki both were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

It’s unclear what caused the Ford to become disabled, police said. There was no word Thursday on charges.
