The employee who was injured when a gunman opened fire at a South Carolina hospital Wednesday is on life support, according to his family.

Abrian Dayquan Sabb “fired multiple shots which struck a nurse,” while they were in the emergency department of the Regional Medical Center-Orangeburg, according to arrest warrants.

A bond hearing was held for the 23-year-old Orangeburg resident Thursday, and a member of the nurse’s family was in attendance, WCSC reported.

The family member described the hospital employee’s medical condition.

“He’s currently in critical care. He has been on life support since yesterday morning,” the family member said, the Times & Democrat reported. “We don’t know if he’s going to pull through because even if he pulls through the immediate issues he’s having, it’s going to be a long, hard battle. He’s a fairly old guy.”

The nurse was shot in the abdomen, an incident report from the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office said.

He had surgery Wednesday and was in critical condition following the operation, hospital president and CEO Charles Williams said at a news conference, The State reported.

The nurse is in “guarded condition,” according to WLTX.

Bond was denied for Sabb, who was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

He has also been charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime from another incident on Wednesday, when he broke into a residence to get the gun used in the hospital shooting, according to arrest warrants.

A member of the Sheriff’s Office spoke highly of the wounded hospital employee during Sabb’s court hearing.

“This victim was in a place that he works and I’ve been there, as many law enforcement officers have been over the years; we’ve always seen him in there. He’s always doing his job. He’s a really nice guy and he didn’t deserve this at all,” investigator Marty Carrigg said, the Times & Democrat reported. “This gentleman shouldn’t be fighting for his life. He’s in the business of saving lives.”
