SC inmate dies after fight breaks out in maximum-security prison

A South Carolina inmate is dead after getting in a fight at an Upstate prison, according to a statement from the Department of Corrections.

Carl Andrew Pollen, Jr., 45, died at about 3 a.m. at Perry Correctional Institution, according to the statement.

Perry Correctional is a maximum-security prison located in Pelzer.

The fight between Pollen and another inmate broke out in his cell at about 2 a.m., according to the statement. Pollen died about an hour later.

The case is being investigated by the Department of Corrections’ Police Services unit and the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

Pollen was serving a life sentence for murder, grand larceny, breaking into a safe or a vault, armed robbery and burglary, according to information from the Department of Corrections. He was first incarcerated in January 2002.
