18-year-old arrested in killing of man found shot in Richland County home

An 18-year-old man is in jail on murder charges after a man was shot and killed over the weekend.

Jaylen Bell was arrested Wednesday, charged with murder in the shooting death of Demetrius Floyd. Bell is also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Bell was taken into custody by Richland County sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Marshals in Columbia on Wednesday morning, three days after Floyd, 34, was found shot multiple times in a home on the 400 block of Dubard Boyle Road.

Floyd suffered gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s department announced at the time. He was taken to a hospital, where he died at 10:38 p.m., the coroner’s office announced.

Investigators launched a search for the suspected shooter that ended in Bell’s arrest on Wednesday. Sheriff Leon Lott, in a statement on the sheriff’s department’s Facebook page, thanked the public for help in locating Bell.

Bell is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
