At least 20 shots fired near Gervais Street, one man hospitalized, Columbia police say
One man was injured when at least 20 shots were fired in a Saturday night shooting in downtown Columbia, police said.
The gunfire occurred just before 6 p.m. on Millwood Avenue, near Gervais Street, the Columbia Police Department said on Twitter.
Officers were alerted by the city’s ShotSpotter technology, and when they responded, found one man was hit by gunfire, Lt. P.T. Blendowski told The State.
His injuries are not considered life threatening, Blendowski said. Police tweeted the man was shot in the hand.
Further information on his condition was not available.
Police tweeted one man was being questioned, but as of 8 a.m. Sunday, no arrests had been made, according to Blendowski.
Information on whether all of the shots were fired from one gun, or if there were multiple weapons being fired, was not available.
There is no word on what led to the shooting.
The shooting was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community, Blendowski said.
Police tweeted they have gathered evidence and are continuing to investigate the shooting.
