Teen in stolen car takes cops on high-speed chase in Richland County, sheriff says
A teenager is behind bars after stealing a car and leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Columbia early Wednesday morning, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.
The incident began around 2:30 a.m., when a deputy spotted a vehicle that was reported stolen earlier in the night, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
When the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop, the driver sped away, according to the release.
After leading the deputy on a high-speed pursuit, the 17-year-old exited the vehicle and tried to run away on foot near the Dick Smith car dealership on Two Notch Road, the sheriff’s department said.
A sheriff’s department dog was used in the search to locate the teen, who was arrested without incident, according to the release.
The teen will be taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where he’ll be charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, the sheriff’s department said.
More charges are possible, according to the release.
No injuries were reported by the sheriff’s department.
Members of the Columbia Police Department and South Carolina Highway Patrol assisted in the pursuit, WACH reported.
