Infant nearly beaten to death, his relative is in jail, Columbia police say

After a baby was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, an adult relative was arrested on multiple charges, the Columbia Police Department said Monday.

Tyrone L. Weeks nearly beat a 3-month-old boy to death on Dec. 2, police said in a news release.

The attack occurred at a home on Bailey Street, and the infant’s mother took him to the hospital, where staff alerted the police. That’s near the intersection of West Beltline Boulevard and Farrow Road.

Doctors said the baby suffered “multiple life-threatening injuries, both internally and externally to his upper and lower body,” according to the release.

Officers and members of the U.S. Marshals service located and arrested Weeks on Dec. 6, police said.

The 24-year-old was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County, where he was charged with attempted murder and unlawful conduct toward a child, jail records show.

He remains behind bars after his bond was set at $750,000, according to jail records.

The infant was released from the hospital and is in the custody of the South Carolina Department of Social Service, police said.

This is at least the second attack on a Columbia child in less than a month. A 3-year-old boy was beaten to death in a Columbia home in November, and an acquaintance of his mother and that man’s roommate were charged, The State reported.
