Get your Christmas card? SC sheriff says people are stealing mail
Mail is being stolen out of mailboxes in Orangeburg County, and the sheriff’s department is warning people to be on the lookout for the grinches who might steal your Christmas greetings.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said Thursday two unidentified women are suspected of stealing mail from more than two dozen addresses in the eastern part of the county.
Investigators have found at least two locations where open mail has been dumped, with any items of value apparently removed.
“It’s one thing to steal mail. But to think that at this time of year there could be a grandmother’s Christmas card to her granddaughter that was just tossed into a ditch?” Ravenell said in a statement. “No, no. Not at all. You think you’re more important than that child getting a gift? We’re going to have a word with you about that. Very soon.”
Video from a home security camera on County Line Road show a white compact car, which investigators have labeled a “vehicle of interest.” They have released an image to the public.
The car was reported to have a small white woman in the passenger seat and an older white woman in the driver’s seat.
Ravenell said investigators are looking for any information from the areas of County Line Road, Belvedere Road and Nelson Ferry Road areas. The sheriff’s department is increasing patrols between Cross and Eutawville in response to the thefts, the sheriff said.
