Columbia man killed trying to break into home after domestic dispute, ID’d by coroner
A Columbia man was shot and killed attempting to break into a Columbia home Saturday, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.
The shooting happened around 6 a.m. at a home in the 3900 block of Wellesley Drive, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That is near the Broad River bridge, where Broad River Road turns into River Drive.
The man was identified as Christon Anderson, a 37-year-old Gervais Street resident, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release.
Deputies responded to a domestic call at the home earlier in the night, but before they arrived Anderson had left, according to the release.
Anderson returned and tried to break in through a window when he was shot by the homeowner, the sheriff’s department said.
He was taken to an area hospital where he died at about 10:45 a.m., according to the coroner’s office.
After performing an autopsy, Watts determined Anderson died from a gunshot wound to the upper body.
No other injuries were reported by the sheriff’s department.
Information on possible criminal charges was not available, but the sheriff’s department and coroner’s office are continuing to investigate the shooting.
