Rock Hill man, 42, shot, police say. 3 teens charged as juveniles as probe continues

Three teens have been charged with attempted murder after a man was shot in a Rock Hill neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Yet because of their ages — each is 16 years -old — the teens will face prosecution as juveniles and not adults, officials said.

The three teenagers are each charged with attempted murder and criminal conspiracy in the shooting of a 42-year-old man, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department.

The victim was found around 4:30 p.m. on Ridgerock Lane in northwestern Rock Hill. He had a gunshot wound to the abdomen, Chavis said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was transported to nearby Piedmont Medical Center hospital, Chavis said. Chavis said the man’s injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.

The three teenagers were arrested after police found the vehicle they were driving on nearby Shurley Street, Chavis said.

“Witnesses had given a description of the vehicle while officers were on scene,” Chavis said.

No motive for the shooting has been publicly released.

“Our detective division continues to investigate what happened,” Chavis said.

The names of the three juvenile suspects have not been released because of their age, Chavis said.

All three are charged as juveniles in South Carolina Family Court, according to police and court records. The suspects will be transported to the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice pending further court appearances, Chavis said.

Juveniles in South Carolina can be held in custody up to age 21 if convicted of violent crimes, state law shows.
