Body found on SC roadside identified by coroner

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office identified a person who was found dead beside the road in mid December.

Coroner Samuetta Marshall identified the person as Alvin W. Sumpter of West Carolina Avenue in Summerville, South Carolina.

Dec. 19, authorities found 41-year-old Sumpter on the side of Sanibel Lane near Saginaw Drive in Eutawville. Paramedics announced Sumpter dead at the scene, Chief Deputy Coroner Sean Fogle said in a statement. An autopsy was performed and the coroner’s office is awaiting toxicology reports that will tell them if Sumpter had consumed any drugs or alcohol.

A man called Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office about 8:54 p.m. after he saw a white car drive away on Sanibel Lane and noticed the body lying where the car had stopped, The Times and Democrat reported.

The coroner’s office and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office are investigating Sumpter’s death.
