Flags to fly at half staff across SC as tribute to officer killed in line of duty
Gov. Henry McMaster ordered flags across South Carolina be lowered to half staff in tribute to the airport public safety officer who was killed in the line of duty.
From sunrise until sunset on Thursday, flags on all state buildings will be lowered in memory of Officer Jackson Ryan Winkeler, the governor’s office said on Twitter.
That’s the same day a funeral service will be held for the 26-year-old Winekler, according to his obituary.
In addition to all state buildings, Gov. McMaster asked that flags that fly over buildings of the political subdivisions in South Carolina also be flown at half staff, according to the tweet.
Winkeler was shot during a traffic stop Sunday morning on Florence Regional Airport property, SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby told The State.
On Monday, James Edward Bell was charged with murder, discharging a firearm into a vehicle, possession of a weapon, and armed robbery with a deadly weapon during a violent crime, jail records show. The 37-year-old Homestead, Florida, man is being held without bond at the Florence County Detention Center, according to jail records.
In addition to Thursday’s funeral, a visitation for Winkeler will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Pyerian Baptist Church in Latta, according to the obituary.
