Wanted man who fired gun at deputies is shot, SC sheriff says
A wanted Midlands man who fired a gun at deputies was injured when the officers returned fire, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said.
The two deputies involved were not injured in the shooting, the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.
The incident occurred at about 7 p.m., when a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop, according to the Facebook post. The driver, later identified as Shaheme Marquis Lindsay, tried to escape, prompting a short chase, the sheriff’s office said.
When a second deputy approached, the 25-year-old Newberry man got out of his vehicle and started to run away, according to the post.
Lindsay then opened fire on the deputies as they continued their chase, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputies returned fire and hit Lindsay, saying they found “an AR-15 type rifle and a semi-automatic pistol” near the Newberry man, it said in the post.
Lindsay was taken to an area hospital, the sheriff’s office said.
Information on his condition was not available.
Arrest warrants had been issued for Lindsay on charges of trafficking crack cocaine, possession of a controlled substance, and a general sessions bench warrant for failure to stop for a law enforcement vehicle, according to the post.
The sheriff said Lindsay was also wanted for questioning in several shooting incidents by his office and the Newberry Police Department.
Court records show Lindsay has an extensive criminal history in Newberry County, including a 2015 conviction on a weapons charge for discharging firearms into a dwelling. He was given a suspended sentence and ordered to serve probation and pay fines for the conviction, according to court records.
In 2017, Lindsay was sentenced to 60 days in jail on a drug possession charge, court records show.
In addition to the ongoing drug charges he’s facing, a weapons charge is pending against Lindsay from a 2018 arrest, according to court records.
The shooting is being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the sheriff’s office is also conducting an internal investigation, according to the post.
Both deputies will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations, the sheriff’s office said.
This was the second officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2020 after 45 were reported last year, according to SLED.
