Man killed in Midlands shooting, says sheriff who is searching for gunman
One man is dead and a search is underway for his killer after a late-night shooting, the Newberry Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.
Deputies responded to a shots fired call just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the Brown Chapel area of Helena, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. That’s less than two miles from Newberry College.
During their search, a 911 call was made reporting that a man who was shot in the chest was found in the road, according to the release.
Someone used a personal vehicle to drive the man to Newberry County Memorial Hospital, where he was dropped off at the ambulance ramp, the sheriff’s office said. The driver left the hospital, according to the release.
The sheriff’s office said hospital staff “took heroic measures,” in an attempt to save the man’s life, but he died early Sunday morning.
Investigators discovered the shooting happened at 211 Brown Chapel Drive, just outside of Newberry, where they found “several expended rifle shell casings in the street and several bullet holes in the residence,” according to the release.
The victim and another man were inside the home when it came under fire from gunshots, the sheriff’s office said.
No other injuries were reported.
There is no word if the gunfire was gang related, or a drive-by shooting.
The Newberry County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the man after his family has been notified.
There are no suspects and no arrests have been made, as the sheriff’s office said it’s trying to piece together the events that led up to the shooting.
The sheriff’s office has asked for the community’s help with information that could lead to charges.
“We are doing everything we can to stop these targeted acts of violence, however we cannot do this without the help of our citizens,” Sheriff Lee Foster said in the release. “Staying silent only empowers those that terrorize good people and their neighborhoods. Please help us put a stop to this nonsense.”
