15-year-old girl shot playing ‘game,’ another teen arrested, Richland Co. sheriff says
A teenage girl was hospitalized while another teen was locked up when a “game” led to a shooting, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.
The shooting occurred just before 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 17, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
Deputies responded to a shots fired call in the 8700 block of Windsor Lake Boulevard, according to the release. The Columbia road is near the junction of Interstate 20 and Interstate 77, close to the Blue Cross Blue Shield campus.
When they arrived, deputies found a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the upper body, the sheriff’s department said.
Deputies also found Ja’cobi Worthy, and the 17-year-old told them he “accidentally” shot the girl “while they were playing a game,” according to the release.
Information on the nature of the “game” was not available.
The girl was taken to an area hospital and Worthy was arrested, the sheriff’s department said.
Further information on the girl’s condition was not available.
Although Worthy is being held in the juvenile wing of the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, he’s being charged as an adult, according to the release. He’s charged with attempted murder, and possession of a pistol under 18 years of age, the sheriff’s department said.
Sheriff Leon Lott said he was frustrated by Worthy’s “complete disregard of gun safety,” which caused one teen serious injuries and the other teenager’s life to be ruined in jail, according to the release.
