Midlands high school student punched her teacher in the face, police say

A Westwood High School student has been charged with assault and battery for allegedly punching her teacher in the face, police said Wednesday.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department did not name the 17-year-old student, but said the incident happened at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday after the teacher “escorted the student to the hallway to have a conversation with her about her cursing at her in the classroom,” according to a news release.

The student then allegedly punched the teacher, causing “redness and swelling to the eye and jaw area,” the release said.

The student was removed from the classroom, charged and released to her parents, according to the release.
