One dead after shooting in car, but no search for suspects or arrests, Irmo cops say

One person died after a shooting inside of a car in a busy area of Irmo, police said.

The shooting happened at about 3 p.m. Wednesday in a car near 185 Old Dutch Fork Road, the Irmo Police Department said in a news release.

That’s close to the intersection of Dutch Fork Road and Broad River Road in an area where several restaurants and retail businesses are located, including a Walmart Supercenter.

Emergency responders found one person had been shot, and other people were in the vehicle, according to the release.

The gunshot victim was taken to an area hospital and died, police said at about 10 p.m.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the shooting victim after notifying the next of kin.

Old Dutch Fork Road was closed for several hours as officers and agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division searched for evidence and information on the gunfire, according to the release.

Police said the other people in the car at the time of the shooting have cooperated with investigators.

No arrests were made and there were no searches for anyone else potentially involved in the shooting, according to the release.

There is no threat to the surrounding area, police said.

Irmo Police, SLED and the coroner’s office continue to investigate the death.
