Chapin teen identified as victim found shot in car near Ballentine and Irmo

A teenage victim who was found shot to death inside a car in a busy area of Irmo has been identified.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said 18-year-old Corey E. Hunt of Sandbar Road in Chapin suffered a bullet wound to the head.

“There does not appear to be any foul play involved at this time,” Watts said in a statement.

Police and paramedics were called Wednesday about 3 p.m. to 185 Old Dutch Fork Road, where they found Hunt along with other people inside the vehicle, the Irmo Police Department said in a release.

That address is near the intersection of Dutch Fork Road and Broad River Road in a commercial area that includes restaurants and a Walmart Supercenter. The address is also close to the Ballentine community.

The other people who were in the vehicle are cooperating with the investigation, according to the department.

Paramedics took Hunt to Prisma Health Richland Hospital, where he died just before 3:40 p.m., according to Watts.

Irmo police called in the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to help search the area for evidence and information on the gunfire, the department said.

Old Dutch Fork Road was closed for several hours as officers and agents investigated.

No arrests were made and police aren’t searching for anyone else involved in the shooting, according to the department.

There is no threat to the surrounding area, the department said.

Irmo Police, SLED and the coroner’s office continue to investigate the death.
