Coroner identifies woman killed in early-morning shooting in Richland County
A woman died after being shot at a Columbia residence Thursday morning, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies responded to a shots fired call shortly after 6 a.m. and found a woman who had been shot in the lower body, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
The woman was taken to an area hospital where she died, the sheriff’s department said.
She was identified as Shakila Shanta Booker, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.
The shooting happened in the 2700 block of Brady Street, but the woman walked a short distance to where she was found in the 1700 block of Carnegie Street, according to the release. That is near the intersection of Two Notch Road and North Beltline Boulevard.
After an autopsy, Watts said the 40-year-old Columbia woman died at 6:49 am. from a gunshot wound to the lower body.
The sheriff’s department did not report if any arrests have been made, only saying its investigation is ongoing.
Information on what led to the shooting was not available.
Booker’s death remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department and the coroner’s office.
