6-year-old girl dies after being hit by truck waiting for school bus, SC coroner says
A 6-year-old South Carolina girl died after being hit by a truck while waiting for her school bus, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office said.
The vehicle collided with Jerrina Horne at about 6:30 a.m. Friday, Coroner Karla Deese said in a news release.
The crash happened on U.S. 521, on a stretch of the highway running through the Pleasant Hill community, according to the release. That’s about 60 miles north of Columbia, just above Kershaw County.
Jerrina was with her grandmother while she was waiting for her bus to pick her up, the Lancaster County School District said in a release shared by WSOC.
After the crash, Jerrina was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina in Lancaster, before being airlifted to Atrium Health in Charlotte, where she died just before 4 p.m., Deese said.
Her grandmother said she was holding hands with Jerrina when she was hit by the pickup truck, WBTV reported.
The driver of the truck has not been charged with any crimes, but the girl’s death remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Deese said.
Counselors were made available for students and staff at Heath Springs Elementary, where Jerrina was a student, the school district said.
“I think this is one of the darkest days you could have as a school employee,” the school district said, according to WCNC.
