SC Midlands man killed in Sumter shooting early Friday morning

A Wedgefield man was shot and killed in the City of Sumter early Friday morning, officials said.

Sherrod Carlton Smith, 31, was sitting inside his vehicle at the 1000 block of South Main Street at 3 a.m. when a man shot him, according to a release from Sumter Police Department. That location is just down the street from Wilder Elementary School.

An unnamed woman, 37, was in the car with Smith when he was shot. She was not harmed, according to the release.

Police have not released the identity of nor a description of a suspect, the release said.
