Corrections officer stabbed, ‘seriously injured’ at SC prison

A corrections officer is recovering after he was attacked inside a high-security prison last week.

The officer was stabbed and “seriously injured” inside a living unit at Lee Correctional Institution on Thursday, the S.C. Department of Corrections announced on Twitter Monday evening.

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital and is now recovering from the injuries at home, the department said.

Police are investigating the attack, and the unit at prison where the attack occurred remains on lockdown. No charges have been announced as of Monday.

The state prison in Bishopville, about 60 miles northeast of Columbia, has seen other violent incidents in the past. In 2018, seven inmates were killed in a prison riot that lasted seven hours before order was restored.

The high-security institution is “designed primarily to house violent offenders with longer sentences, and inmates who exhibit behavioral problems,” the Department of Corrections has said.
