Officials identify Gaston teen who died in Lexington County car crash
The teen who died in a Swansea car accident Friday has been identified as Kenneth Chase Cathey, 16, of Gaston, officials said.
At roughly 10 a.m., Cathey and a passenger were driving on private property to go fishing in a pond when the car went down an embankment and into a spillway and turned on its side, filling up with water, according to a news release from Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.
Cathey was unable to see the embankment because of tall grass, the release said.
Fisher determined Cathey’s death was caused by drowning. Neither Cathey nor the passenger in the car was wearing a seat belt, according to the release.
The other passenger, who is under 18 years old and has not been named, was taken to an unspecified hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, the release said.
The car left the roadway on the 500 block of Martin Neese Road near Swansea and became submerged in the spillway, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said in a tweet.
