5 people charged in mob assault, robbery in Lexington County

Eight months after a man was beaten and robbed in Lexington County, five people have been arrested and charged in connection with the crime.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department on Friday announced the arrests of four men and a woman in connection with the mob assault that happened on Sharon Church Road in August 2019.

Dominic Dukes, 28; Robert Jeffcoat, 25; Raymond Stierwald Sr., 44; Raymond Stierwald Jr., 24; and Mattie Suggs, 18, are charged with first-degree assault and battery, conspiracy, assault by mob, kidnapping and armed robbery, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.

Stierwald Jr. and Suggs face additional charges of pointing and presenting a firearm and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Sheriff’s investigators say the suspects approached a man last August about some property they said was stolen from the Stierwald home. Deputies say members of this group punched the man while he was inside a car and stole his hat, watch and cash.

Deputies say a friend of the victim fired a gunshot into the air, sending the group driving away.

Investigators reviewed security video from the location of the crime, Sheriff Jay Koon said in a news release. Based on the video and witness statements, investigators identified the five suspects and established probable cause to arrest them, Koon said.
