Two arrested for murder, armed robbery in Sumter homicide case

Sumter Police Department

A couple has been arrested for murder and armed robbery in the April 22 shooting death of a Sumter man, law enforcement announced Tuesday.

Markel Anthony Atkinson, 22, and Tracy Angela Legg, 25, were arrested Monday night after Sumter police identified them leaving the Lewis Road area around the time of the death of Tarrik Mack-Sumpter, 27.

Mack-Sumpter was shot in the backyard of his own home and later died last Wednesday, according to WLTX.

Two people were seen fleeing the area in a white car around 1:45 p.m., the time of the murder police said. During their investigation, police said they believed there was a planned drug deal at Mack-Sumpter’s home that instead turned into an armed robbery that resulted in his death.

The day after the shooting, police released a sketch of a male suspect. On Monday, officers arrested Atkinson and Legg.

Atkinson was taken into custody in Bishopville, where he lives, after a short foot chase, while Legg, identified as Atkinson’s girlfriend, was arrested in Sumter without incident.

In addition to both being charged with murder and armed robbery, Atkinson was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime. They are being detained in the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, while the investigation continues.
