7-year-old boy killed, 13-year-old girl hurt in shooting, Columbia police say

A little boy was killed and a teen girl was injured Wednesday night in a shooting, said the Columbia Police Department.

A search is underway to locate the shooter, or shooters, police told The State Thursday.

A 7-year-old boy died and a 13-year-old girl was hurt in the shooting that occurred at home on Tarragon Drive, police said. That’s near the junction of Farrow Road and S.C. 277.

There was no word on the condition of the 13-year-old girl.

The boy will be publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

Information on what led up to the shooting, and the number of people involved in the gunfire, was not available. Police did not say if there is an ongoing threat to the community.

But a news conference with Police Chief Skip Holbrook, Columbia Mayor Stephen Benjamin, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, and city council members will be held Thursday afternoon at Columbia Police Department headquarters.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or report it to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
