SC man found with marijuana in hotel room charged with attempted murder, sheriff says

An Orangeburg man wanted for attempted murder was taken into custody on Friday in a hotel room filled with marijuana, sheriff’s deputies say.

Nicholas Franklin, 38, is accusing of shooting a man during an attempted robbery while the victim sat on his front porch, sending the man to the hospital, the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office said.

He faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

On April 22, Franklin and a woman reportedly approached a 48-year-old man sitting on the porch of his College Avenue home. The pair drove up to the home in a blue Chrysler and demanded money from the man, deputies said.

When the man said he didn’t have any money, they demanded he empty pockets. He was then shot in the midsection, and had to be taken to the hospital.

On Friday, Franklin was seen at the Crown Inn on Bamberg Road. He was taking into custody in a room where deputies also recovered a quantity of marijuana, along with digital scales and plastic bags. Investigators say they believe Franklin was using the hotel room to sell marijuana.

Franklin has booked into the county jail and given a bond of $20,000.
