SC Midlands woman charged with murder after domestic dispute, police say

An Orangeburg woman has been charged with murder after police say she shot a man following a domestic dispute.

Shantell Corley, 33, allegedly shot an unidentified, 33-year-old man Wednesday afternoon at an apartment complex on Presidential Drive.

“This is the not the first time we’ve been to this address in response to a domestic dispute,” Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in a press release. “In just a few minutes, this went from (an) argument to someone being shot.”

The dispute began when Corley’s car had been taken from the apartment complex while she was asleep, a witness told police. The witness, a neighbor of Corley’s, went with Corley to get her car back, but a tow truck had brought the car back to the house, according to the incident report.

Once the truck left, the unidentified man came out of the apartment to help Corley find something in her car. The two began arguing and Corley punched the man, a witness told police. They then went inside and continued fighting, according to the incident report.

The two then came outside and continued arguing. Corley, who had a handgun, shot twice at the man, hitting him in the stomach with the second shot, according to the incident report.

Corley ran back into the apartment while waiving the gun around and telling neighbors to not call the police. She also entered another person’s apartment and threatened to kill the occupants, something police cited as a reason she was also charged with burglary.

When police arrived, at about 5:45 p.m., they found one of the neighbors using a towel to slow the bleeding from the man’s gunshot wound, police said.

Corley then ran out of an apartment building and said “I shot him,” according to the news release.

Police arrested her and booked her into Orangeburg County Detention Center, according to the release.

Corley is set to appear in court on Friday.
