SC detainee who escaped last year arrested for trying to break out again, police say
A man who had eluded police for two months before stealing a police car and leading authorities on an armed, 110 mile per hour high-speed chase, was arrested for attempting to once again break out of a detention center, police say.
Curtis Green, 22, was arrested alongside Orangeburg County Detention Center detainees Leroy Bowers, 36 and Steve Rolley, 22, for allegedly trying to dig a hole in their cell wall, according to a news release from the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Detainees had jammed the locks on their doors to prevent officers from coming in, but once they were caught, authorities convinced them to come out without a fight, according to the news release.
In 2018, Green escaped with two other men after detainees created a “disturbance” at the prison, overpowered a guard and — aided by an electrical malfunction — used the chaos to slip out, according to a previous article from The State.
Green was arrested in 2016 for a 2015 fatal shooting, according to the release.
“Each one of these who attempted this escape are awaiting trial for murder,” Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in a statement. “But fortunately these violent individuals were discovered before their plan was complete.”
Green’s escape charge could carry a sentence of 15 years. Bond was denied for the Green, Bowers and Rolley, the release said.
