Man working at Lexington County jail gets locked up with inmate he helped, cops say
A Midlands man working at the Lexington County Detention Center found himself locked up at the jail after providing contraband to an inmate.
Joshua Lawrence Clyburn was arrested Monday, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
The 28-year-old Orangeburg man was working for the jail’s food service provider when he was accused of giving forbidden items to Michael Channing Moses, according to the release.
“During our work on this case, detectives saw Clyburn handing items to Moses on security camera video,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in the release. “Moses was found to be in possession of some tobacco products and other personal items not readily available to inmates.”
Clyburn turned himself in and was released on a personal recognizance bond, the sheriff’s department said. An arrest warrant shows he was charged with furnishing contraband inside a county correctional facility.
Information was not available if Clyburn was fired, or if he faced any punishment from his employer, Aramark.
Moses, a 45-year-old Dalzell resident, was charged with possessing contraband while being housed as an inmate, jail records show.
He’s being held at the detention center following a Dec. 10, 2019 arrest for shoplifting — value more than $2,000 and less than $10,000, according to Lexington County court records.
No bond was set on Moses’ new charge, but he remained locked up after a $25,000 surety bond was set on the property offense, jail records show.
In 2002, Moses pleaded guilty to a drug charge, according to court records.
