Three killed at Midlands party, five others injured, SC cops say

Three people were killed and five others were hurt in an overnight shooting at a Midlands home, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The gunfire broke out at a party being held at a Bowman residence in the 7000 block of Charleston Highway, SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby told The State Tuesday. That’s less than half a mile from the Bowman Police Department.

Although there is no ongoing threat to the community, as of 1:20 p.m., no arrests were made and nobody was taken into custody for their role in the shooting, Crosby said.

SLED is leading the investigation on the request of the Bowman police, and agents are in the process of figuring out what happened and the motive for the shooting, according to Crosby.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the people killed after their families have been notified.

Information on the condition of the eight people injured in the shooting was not available, but some of the injuries are considered life threatening.

This is the second deadly shooting at a party held on private property in South Carolina in the past four days. Two people, a 17-year-old and a 21-year-old, were killed at a post-coronavirus block party where a 1,000 people were in attendance Saturday, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said.

“Parties like these on private property are not uncommon and can cause a problem when people drink and want to gather with one another from being under quarantine,” Sheriff David Taylor said in the release.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or report it to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, or DHEC, is encouraging people to practice social distancing to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing is staying away from unnecessary interactions with sick people and from large groups of people; it also calls for remaining at home unless it is absolutely necessary to go out.
