UPDATE: One killed in Family Dollar shooting Sunday morning, Columbia Police say

An investigation is underway after a man was killed in a shooting Sunday morning, the Columbia Police Department said.

The shooting happened a little after 8 a.m. outside the Family Dollar convenience store in the 5300 block of Fairfield Road, police said. That’s near the intersection with North Main Street, in an area densely packed with retail businesses, restaurants, churches and schools.

The man who was shot suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital, where he later died, police said.

No other injuries were reported, Lt. A.E. Rease told The State.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the man after notifying his family and performing an autopsy on Monday.

There was no word on what led to the gunfire, or how many people were involved.

Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage from the scene, police said.

No gunman, or gunmen, were taken into custody as a search was underway, Rease said.

Police said the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or report it to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
