23-year-old man killed overnight in shooting identified, Columbia police say
An investigation is underway following a deadly shooting overnight, the Columbia Police Department said Tuesday.
The shooting happened Monday, just before midnight, the department said in a statement
Police found a man dead in a vehicle near an apartment building at 901 Colleton St., according to the statement. That’s near North Main Street, not far from the intersection with Fairfield Road.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim as 23-year-old Delvin K. Weems. He died from a gunshot to the upper body, Watts said.
Information on a shooter, or shooters, was not available and there was no word on a motive for the gunfire. Investigators have spoken to witnesses and are continuing to gather information, a department spokesperson said.
Police are asking for the community’s help in providing tips to help the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
901 Colleton St. is the address of the Gable Oaks Apartments, where a 29-year-old man was killed in a shooting last week.
Leona Toatley, 29, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime from the July 14 shooting, according to a press release.
Information was not available if there are any connections between the shootings.
