After killing his roommate, Columbia man robbed him, Richland County sheriff says

Another charge was filed against a Columbia man who was arrested for killing his roommate, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.

Timothy Shells is behind bars at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center after being charged with murder last Friday, jail records show.

On Monday, the 31-year-old Shells was charged with armed robbery, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

The sheriff’s department said after Shells stabbed Dexter Craft, he stole some of the 55-year-old’s belongings, including his wallet.

An investigation began Thursday.

At about 2 p.m., deputies responded to a call about an unresponsive man found near the 200 block of Woodcrest Drive, which is in a neighborhood off Fairfield Road about a mile from Interstate 20.

Deputies found Craft dead.

During an investigation, deputies learned Shells and Craft lived in the same home in the 200 block of Woodcrest, according to the release. The roommates had an argument on Thursday that became physical, the sheriff’s department said.

Information on what the men argued about was not available.

Bail was not set on the murder charge, and a bond hearing on the armed robbery charge is scheduled for Monday, Richland County court records show.

If convicted on the murder charge, Shells could face a sentence of 30 years to life in prison, according to South Carolina law.

The maximum punishment for the armed robbery charge in South Carolina is 30 years in prison.
