Waffle House robbery ends after armed customer intervenes, Richland Co. sheriff says

Shots were fired during an armed robbery inside a Waffle House in Columbia early Tuesday morning, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.

No injuries were reported after two men entered the Waffle House, at 2345 Broad River Road, and demanded money, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s near the junction with Interstate 20 at Exit 65, and less than a mile from Dutch Square Center shopping mall.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a hold-up alarm at the restaurant around midnight, according to the release.

When they arrived, deputies said they learned that one of the men demanding money fired two shots inside the Waffle House after being confronted by an armed customer. That customer holds a concealed weapons permit, according to the release.

After the gunfire, which shattered a window, the two men ran away, the sheriff’s department said.

Information on the men involved in the armed robbery was not available, and the incident remains under investigation. The sheriff’s department is asking for the public’s help identifying the men.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 803-576-3000, or report it to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
