Lexington County man charged in connection with shooting that injured police officers

A Lexington County man is charged with attempted murder after a shooting that left deputies injured.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division announced two attempted murder charges against Albertus David Lewis, 27, from Lexington County on Friday. Lewis was charged in connection with a shooting that left two Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies injured, according to a news release from SLED.

On Aug. 9, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a call about a domestic dispute at Lewis’ home. Police allege Lewis used a four-year-old child as a “human shield while armed with a handgun” during a confrontation with police, according to an arrest warrant. Three sheriff’s deputies “engaged in a physical altercation” with Lewis, he broke free from it and fired “multiple shots,” which struck two of the officers, according to the warrant.

The deputies were transported to Prisma Health Richland Hospital for treatment, said the warrant signed by Magistrate Judge Gary S. Morgan.

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department requested SLED investigate the shooting, and the investigation is ongoing, according to a news release. The case will be prosecuted by the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
