Parts of Five Points taped off after man was found shot, Columbia police say
The Columbia Police Department is investigating after a man was found shot in the Five Points area early Sunday.
It was about 6 a.m. when the man was discovered in the 600 block of Harden Street, police said on Twitter.
The man, who has not been identified, was taken to an area hospital after he was found, Lt. Pegram told The State.
The shooting was reported to police by the Richland County Emergency Services Department on Laurens Street, which Pegram said was the first agency to respond to the man with the gunshot wound. An EMS worker discovered the man and got him medical aid, according to the tweet.
Police are trying to determine if the shooting occurred in Five Points, or within Columbia’s city limits. The intersection of Harden and Devine streets, near the old Yesterday’s restaurant and bar, was blocked off by police tape, as was an area close to Jake’s across the street.
No witnesses or a possible suspect have been identified.
Police have not been able to question the man, who underwent surgery at an area hospital, but is expected to survive, according to Pegram.
Investigators are looking at surveillance footage from the area, police said.
“It’s believed the man was initially inside a car with someone before getting out on Harden Street,” police tweeted.
Information if the shooting was an isolated incident, or is considered an active threat, was not available.
There was a large law enforcement presence in Five Points, spectator video showed.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call 911 or report it to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
Five Points is an area with several bars and restaurants that is a popular destination, especially with University of South Carolina students.
