Teen charged in northeast Columbia apartment complex shooting
The crack of gun shots disturbed Greenbrier Apartments just as the late evening settled in on Aug. 20. Now, police have arrested a teen for the fatal shooting that occurred that night.
Richland County Sheriff’s Department charged a 16-year-old with murder.
The department did not identify the suspect because he is a juvenile.
About 9 p.m. Aug. 20, people called Richland deputies to the Greenbier Apartments on the 100 block of Willow Oak Drive in northeast Columbia off Parklane Road.
When deputies arrived, they found a man shot near a parking lot in the complex. The man died at the scene.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim at as 23-year-old Iman Riza Wilson. He died from a gunshot wound to the upper body, Watts said.
Wilson lived at the apartment complex and had just turned 23 about two weeks before the shooting.
The sheriff’s department and the coroner’s office asked the public for help finding the gunman.
Friday, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s fugitive task force arrested the teen while he was at a friend’s house. The sheriff’s department said agents arrested the teen without incident.
Deputies jailed the teen in the juvenile wing of Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Juveniles charged with murder can be tried as adults in South Carolina. The solicitor’s office of Richland County will be responsible for making the decision whether to try the teen as an adult or juvenile.
Richland County Sheriff’s Department said it “would like to thank the community for their cooperation and assistance in helping solve this investigation.”
