RCSD: Nine charged in Richland County jail stabbing, fight over use of prison phone

An attack on an inmate over the use of the phone in the Richland County jail has led to nine men being charged, according to police.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department charged the inmates involved in the attack with assault by mob.

The fight occurred in May at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, which is off Bluff Road near Lower Richland.

A group of inmates didn’t want another inmate using the jail phone at a certain time, deputies said. The inmate used the phone anyway.

On the night of May 4, the group coordinated an attack on the inmate over his phone use. Another detainee came to help the inmate who was being assaulted. The detainee who came to the victim’s aid was also assaulted by the group.

In the fray one of the victims was stabbed, deputies said.

Deputies charged the following people:

  • Christopher Cravets, 24.
  • Saequez Morris, 22.
  • Genari McNeil, 19.
  • Jason Crushhon, 29.
  • Drevon Payne, 20.
  • Marquise Randolph, 21.
  • Marcel Dillon, 24.
  • Arion Clarkson, 20.
  • Tony Williams, 19.

The sheriff’s department said all the men are “known gang members.”

The Midlands Gang Task Force, which is a consortium of police agencies that investigates gang activity, learned about the attack on Aug. 13 and investigated it.

Additional charges and/or arrests may be forthcoming, the department said.
