Argument at Columbia home turns into shooting, Richland County sheriff says
An argument at a Columbia home Saturday resulted in a shooting that left one man in jail and another in an area hospital, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said.
The gunfire happened around 3 p.m., at a home on Porchester Court, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s near Exit 71 on Interstate 20, which is the junction with U.S. 21 where Wilson Boulevard becomes North Main Street.
Vancito Watkins was arrested near the scene of the shooting, according to the release. The 49-year-old Columbia man lives about 10 miles north of Porchester Court, Richland County Court records show.
Watkins and a 30-year-old man had an ongoing dispute that escalated into the shooting, the sheriff’s department said.
Information was not available on what they argued about, or if only one weapon was involved in the shooting.
The 30-year-old was rushed to an area hospital, according to the release. Further information on his condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported by the sheriff’s department.
Watkins was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where he was charged with attempted murder, jail records show. On Sunday he remained behind bars awaiting a bond hearing, according to jail records.
