Man killed in early-morning shooting close to USC campus, Columbia police say

One man is dead and an investigation has begun following an early Tuesday morning shooting, the Columbia Police Department said.

The gunfire was reported around 6 a.m. at the Rivers Edge Apartments, at 1 Catawba Circle, police said on Twitter. That’s next to the Congaree River and Founders Park, the home stadium of the University of South Carolina baseball team.

Several USC students live in that area — where Huger Street turns into Whaley Street, near Granby Mills and Olympia Mills — but police have not said that any students were involved in the shooting.

The man died at the scene, and investigators are working to gather information about the shooting.

He was identified as Stephen Michael Seegars, according to the Richland County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy showed the 30-year-old Orangeburg resident died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to police.

Seegars was not a student at USC, university spokesman Jeff Stensland told The State.

No shooter, or shooters, have been publicly identified by police, and no motive for the gunfire was released.

Information was not available if police consider the shooting an isolated incident or an ongoing threat.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911, or CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
