Suspect in custody after Columbia police, SLED respond to Allen University shooting

Officers from the Columbia Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division responded to a shooting involving a police officer at Allen University on Friday afternoon, and a suspect is in custody.

SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby told The State the agency is assisting Allen University and responded in part because the shooting involved an officer. In a release sent Friday evening, Crosby said shots were fired during a confrontation between an officer and a man.

Allen University’s director of marketing and communications, Anika Cobb, said no one was shot during the incident and that SLED has a person in custody. She could not say whether that person was an Allen student.

SLED has not confirmed whether the officer was the shooter or was shot at. It also said both the officer and the man were injured in the incident but did not specify if those injuries were gunshot-related. None of the injuries are life-threatening, the agency said.

More than a dozen Columbia PD cars responded to the scene around 4 p.m., and the department tweeted at 4:09 p.m. that it is assisting SLED and Allen with the incident.
