Teenager crashes stolen car into north Columbia apartment, police say

A 17-year-old man is facing charges after Columbia police say he crashed a stolen car into a north Columbia apartment building after leading officers on a brief chase Monday afternoon.

Around 5 p.m., the man stole a car from in front of a North Main Street home, the Columbia Police Department said in a press release.

A woman reported the teenager stole the car after he pushed her out of the way as she was attempting to put her child into a car seat. Neither the woman nor the child reported any injuries from the car theft.

Police spotted a car matching the stolen vehicle’s description a short time later. The driver refused to stop for a traffic stop and led officers on a brief chase before crashing into an apartment building at the Colony Apartments on West Beltline Boulevard.

After the crash, the man attempted to flee on foot, but was soon apprehended.

Residents were home at the time of the crash, police say, but no injuries were reported.

The unnamed teen faces charges of failure to stop for blue lights, failure to stop on police command, hit and run and not having a driver’s license. Investigators are also looking into charges of strong-arm robbery and first-degree assault for the car theft.

The teen will be held in the juvenile section of the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
